Yes, the road was long and winding to get here, and it took five hours, and we had to stop once for Chris to get out feeling nauseous because no one told us how winding it was going to be so she didn’t take Dramamine - but another leg of our journey ended with a pleasant destination.
Spice Village is quite quaint and we like our cottage and the staff is helpful and very well versed in English. The cottage doesn’t photograph all that well because it is a bit dimly lit but that’s part of the charm. And the bathroom is well lit and seems modernized so it’s a good mix of cool older style furnishings with what we prefer for personal hygiene needs.
After our nice lunch on arrival, we did go out and had access to a trail inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve. You have to have a reservation and also an additional guide from the reserve. No one explained much about that to us, but between Mahendra, the local guide, Ajo, and the military guide we are in pretty good hands. Fortunately there will be no jeep safaris and all birding will be by foot or boat. No one has explained if there are actually tigers here either and the guard/military dude does not carry a gun so probably no tigers. He did open an electric fence for us which felt pretty cool. We got some good birds today and tomorrow we get picked up at 6:50 am (a luxury) to go back and hike a different trail inside the reserve.
